The Glam Factor: Drybar Opening a Midtown NYC Location

“No cuts. No color. Just blowouts for only $40.” That’s the mantra of one of my favorite New York City spots – Drybar. The concept is simple: Schedule an appointment, pick a cocktail-inspired blowout of the “menu,” sit at the “bar” and indulge in a fabulous blowout while you sip on wine or champagne. Alli Webb founded the chain by expanding her side business called Straight-at-Home, which she created after years as a professional stylist. Locations span the U.S. with seven bars in California, one in Scottsdale, Arizona, one in Atlanta, Georgia, two in Texas and, now with the grand opening of a Midtown location on Thursday, two in New York City.

Located inside Le Parker Meridien hotel at 119 West 56th Street, this brand-new Midtown Manhattan location joins its Flatiron counterpart on January 26. In addition to Drybar, the new Underground at Le Parker Meridien will feature a brand-new Gravity Fitness, the hotel’s first spa, Moonshine Spa, a nail salon, tenoverten and Petit BluDog for healthy bites.

Drybar was mentioned in SpaFinder’s Top Ten Spa Trends for 2012, under the “Glambition” trend for obvious reasons! By giving people the option of walking in and getting a red carpet-worthy style for only $40, Drybar makes it possible for women to always look “done.” I recently went to the Flatiron location to get a blowout for my birthday. Making the appointment was easy as pie, and I arrived and was taken back to have my hair washed right away.

I was then asked which style I wanted from the menu or if I had something else in mind, proof that these stylists are pros that are able to veer off the menu. I already had the “Cosmo-Tai” in mind for the look I was hoping for, and when my stylist asked me if I would be going out that night or the next I was further assured of her talent, as she made the curls a bit tighter and didn’t condition the top of my head, knowing that the following day the style would look amazing, voluminous and be exactly what I “ordered.”

Cosmo Tai 1024x682 The Glam Factor: Drybar Opening a Midtown NYC Location

I was offered a drink and magazines to read as she worked at my hair turning into the Kardashian-esque mane I so badly wanted. The one thing to note – the mirrors are behind you, so you can’t see what’s happening on your head until it’s done. I found this strange initially but then realized that it made the experience much more relaxing, as I focused on other things rather than what my hair looked like in the in-between stage.

I left with exactly what I ordered from the menu and a vow to return the next time I wanted some fabulous hair!

How-Tuesday: Golden Globes Glam

Awards season is upon us again, giving us many nights worth of lust-worthy fashion, drool-worthy hairstyles and some of the most impeccable makeup looks 2012 will bring. This past Sunday was no exception with the Golden Globes. Let’s dedicate this How-Tuesday on achieving two ravishing red carpet looks!

Zooey Deschanel gets Golden Globe glam with Rimmel London

Zoeey Deschanel Golden Globes 2012 CO Tractenberg Co How Tuesday: Golden Globes Glam

Zooey Deschanel, face of Rimmel London and star of Fox’s New Girl, hit the carpet with her signature blunt indie bangs and high-impact eyes courtesy of Rimmel London and celebrity makeup artist, Jorjee Douglass. “Zooey is one of my favorite clients because she loves to have fun with her makeup, hair and fashion,” says Douglass. “We brought out the big guns tonight for a stunning red carpet look unlike any other.” Douglass prepped Deschanel’s porcelain skin with Rimmel London Fix & Perfect Pro Primer, which pulls double duty as it moisturizes and mattifies the skin. The next step was using Rimmel London Match Perfection Foundation in Ivory for long-lasting even coverage. Under Deschanel’s eyes and on any imperfections, Douglass used Rimmel London Match Perfection Concealer in Light and Fair. “I kept the mod inspiration on the eyes, creating a cat eye shape. I used Rimmel London’s Glam’Eyes Professional Liquid Liner on the top of the lid and a feathered line on the bottom. I topped the liner with Rimmel London Glam’Eyes HD Quad Eyeshadow in Black Cab and English Rose for a soft smoky eye. Then I loaded up her lashes with Rimmel London Lash Accelerator Mascara to make her long lashes even longer.” Douglass finished by keeping the rest of the face natural and highlighting the cheeks with Rimmel London Lasting Finish Blendable Blush & Highlighter in Autumn Blush and adding a touch of color to the lips with Rimmel London Lasting Finish Intense Wear Lipstick in Nude Pink.

Shailene Woodley uses Bioré for a flawless glow!

Shailene Woodley, star of ABC Family’s The Secret Life of the American Teenager and nominated for her work alongside George Clooney in 2011’s The Descendants, is a rising start in Hollywood, and happens to have a face of perfect skin. Celebrity makeup artist Gloria Noto shared her tips for getting Woodley ready for this year’s Golden Globes and her secret — Bioré® Combination Skin Balancing Cleanser.  “It’s absolutely vital to start with clean, nourished skin,” says Noto. “I used Bioré Combination Skin Balancing Cleanser because it strips away dirt and impurities without stripping skin’s natural moisture.” To achieve Woodley’s effortless look, Noto kept the complexion simple. Using minimal foundation and a touch of bronzer to contour the cheekbones, Noto had a perfect canvas to bring out Woodley’s almond-shaped eyes. She smudged a dark cream shadow along the lash line and added peach eyeliner to make her eyes pop.  The finishing touches were several layers of mascara and a sheer nude lip.

Products we LOVE: Juara Tamarind Tea Hydrating Toner

Back in the day, I only associated toner with blue astringent; it stung, it made my face red and it smelled like rubbing alcohol mixed with the hope for clear skin – clearly my toner memories were bleak.

Fast forward to my mid-twenties and the realization that toner is not the harsh chemical-laden blue liquid of my past, but rather an integral part of any skincare routine, because all skin is thirsty for hydration and toners feed that thirst. Whether your skin is oily, combination, normal or dry – you need to be using a toner.

tamarind tea1 Products we LOVE: Juara Tamarind Tea Hydrating Toner

One that I recommend is Juara Tamarind Tea Hydrating Toner. Juara is an East-meets-West Indonesian line of skincare and treatments, which are inspired by the ancient spa experience. The products are 100% vegetarian, paraben-free, phthalates-free, sulfate-free and have not been tested on animals. So,  not only are these products great for you, but you can feel great about using them, too.

Put simply, the Juara Tea Hydrating Toner has the ability to make me feel better about my skin immediately by giving it the extra dose of hydration it needs, especially at this time of year. It calms redness and makes my dry skin soft and prepped for moisturizer, or even primer, before my makeup in the morning. The key ingredients are what really make this a necessary part of any skincare routine:

Hyaluronic acid, a protein naturally found in the skin, helps retain the skin’s own moisture. According to Dermatology Times, as we get older, hyaluronic acid in the skin decreases, so products containing this ingredient can be helpful with skin hydration. This ingredient holds 500 times its own weight of water which helps give skin a plumping-effect.

Tamarind, a curved brown bean-pod used in Indonesia for numerous health conditions and in cooking, improves skin smoothness, stimulates the regenerative process and increases hydration.

Green, white and black teas, strongly present in Indonesian culture, have been shown to decrease the risk of free radical damage and stimulate cell and DNA repair.

To use the toner, first cleanse your skin then pump a quarter-sized amount of it into the palms of your hands (that’s right not a cotton ball like back in the blue-astringent days!). In a patting and smoothing motion, spread the toner directly onto your face – the toner has a gel-like quality which is why the cotton ball or applicator is unnecessary. Finish by applying your favorite serum and  moisturizer and you can thank us—and Juara— later!

How-Tuesday: Red Carpet 101 with René Furterer and Jacqueline Bush

Actress and new face of G-Star Raw, Clémence Poésey’s look always evokes an easy Parisian flair. Her signature undone look is the product of celebrity stylist Jacqueline Bush of Aim Artists. “When creating a look for Clémence, I always go for a style that’s effortless yet utterly chic,” says Jacqueline. “The trick to an undone look with staying power is to mix the right cocktails with the right styling products to enhance hair’s natural movement while adding flexible hold.” You too can achieve Clémence Poésey’s look by following these simple steps from Jacqueline and using René Furterer styling products:

Clemence Poesy GStarRaw Courtesy of Karen Oliver Associates How Tuesday: Red Carpet 101 with René Furterer and Jacqueline Bush

1. Lightly mist hair with water and then pump two quarter-size squeezes of René Furterer Vegetal Sculpting Gel and two dime-size portions of a light pomade into your palms and rub together to emulsify the mixture. Run hands through hair from roots to ends. “The gel and pomade cocktail add long-lasting hold without leaving hair too stiff to move easily.”

2. Next, using a blow-dryer and your hands in lieu of a styling brush, rough dry  your hair in its natural part while twisting some sections using your fingertips to give hair more lift, wave and texture.

3. Taking random sections of hair, including a few face-framing pieces, use curling irons, alternating between 3/4 -inch, 1-inch and ¼-inch irons, to curl hair in different directions. About ¾ of the hair is left loose – “I lightly curl just enough sections to add a bit of movement throughout the hair,” says Jacqueline.

4. After letting your sections cool (because “touching them while still hot will make the curls collapse”) run your fingers through your hair to loosen up the curls. Leave a few pieces to fall freely around the face on either side of the part. Gather the rest, pulling to one side, and loosely divide it into three sections. Braid hair starting at the base, “taking care to be neither too messy nor too perfect.” Leave about 2-3 inches at the ends free to keep up with the “overall organic look of the braid.”

5. Secure the braid with a small elastic band and take a small piece of hair from underneath the end of the braid and wrap it around the elastic, pinning the piece underneath the braid. “Again, the key is to not wrap it too neatly, you want the effect to look effortless.”

6. Loosen up the braid with your fingertips to make it look asymmetrical. For more suppleness and shine, Jacqueline recommends adding a touch of René Furterer Styling Wax at the end of the braid and on the face-framing pieces. Lastly, mist the braid lightly with a normal strength hairspray.

Spa News: SpaHalekulani Makes Waves with Waterless Pedicures

We aim to be on top of the latest and greatest spa trends here at SpaWish, so the moment we caught wind of the innovative new waterless pedicure and manicure service now being offered at Honolulu’s SpaHalekulani, we knew we had to fill you in. Featured on The Doctors, the waterless pedicure is not only an incredibly safe and sanitary alternative to traditional pedicures, but it’s also ten times more environmentally friendly. As the first spa in Hawaii to adopt these services, SpaHalekulani is helping to make waves in the spa industry while staying true to its belief in the sanctity of land and water.

iStock 000012003351Small 300x199 Spa News: SpaHalekulani Makes Waves with Waterless Pedicures

Traditional pedicures can be great to get,  but the impact on the environment might be surprising to some. The typical pedicure using spa pedicure chairs consumes 12 to 15 gallons of water, PER PEDICURE! In addition, the chemical cleaning products required to keep these chairs sanitary can negatively impact our ocean life and ecosystem, says Lena Mossman, spa director of SpaHalekulani. With waterless pedicures, spas are not only saving the environment but they are saving money, too, which makes the environmentally friendly service a deal for clients; they typically run cheaper than traditional pedicures and you can enjoy them guilt-free!

So you might be wondering, how does a waterless pedicure work? First and foremost, get comfy. Most spas will have recliners for you to sit in so it’s not a total departure from the traditional spa pedicure. Your technician will then use a steamed towel to soften and relax your legs and feet. Following the warm towel is the usual nail shaping and cuticle conditioning.  Next up is a gentle exfoliation and callus removal followed by a warm foot massage and polish.

We’re hoping many other spas will follow SpaHalekulani’s lead and find other environmentally friendly alternatives to some of our favorite spa treatments.

Have you had a waterless pedicure?  Tell us about it in the comments or on Facebook!

Products we LOVE: Soap & Glory

While we normally spotlight just one product in our Product of the Week, I knew I would be amiss if I didn’t share both of the great products I tried from Soap & Glory because, frankly, they work amazingly well together.

soap and glory Products we LOVE: Soap & Glory

Soap & Glory, a line of bath, body and beauty products launched in 2006, is the latest brainchild of “suds-loving beauty baroness” and founder of an incredibly widespread and successful chain of spas (Bliss Spa anyone?), Marcia Kilgore. The line was recently picked up by the beauty mecca that is Sephora. While Soap & Glory’s cheeky names and girly pink designs might catch your attention at first, after trying them, you’ll know that they are so much more than just a pretty box. The products have the most delicious signature “pink fragrance,” which features fresh bergamot, mandarin, rose, jasmine, peach, strawberry, oakmoss, amber, woody notes and amber and warm vanilla notes on the bottom. It’s incredibly feminine without being overpowering. Here’s the low-down on the two products I tried—and loved.

Use this First: Scrub ‘Em and Leave ‘Em Body Buff; 10.1 oz., $18

scrubemandleaveem Products we LOVE: Soap & Glory

This scrub smells incredible; it contains beautiful notes of bergamot, black currant, magnolia, freesia, vanilla, and musk (also found in the line’s flirty, floral body spray, Mist You Madly). The babassu oil, a very fast penetrating oil with similar benefits as coconut oil, sea salt and moisturizing jojoba and mandarin oils get to work right away, leaving skin exfoliated and smooth.

Follow with: The Righteous Butter; 10.1 oz., $18

therighteousbutter Products we LOVE: Soap & Glory

Softening shea butter and aloe vera make this body butter incredibly moisturizing and effective. Created for very dry skin with a new dynamic moisture trap matrix to help hold hydration in longer, it left my skin perfectly quenched without feeling greasy. Plus, that signature pink fragrance made my skin smell amazing. Perhaps the first moisturizer that I don’t even have to think about putting on after my shower, it’s officially become the part I look forward to.

Together, these Product(s) of the Week work perfectly and will help you tackle dry skin all year long!

How-Tuesday: Lose the Holiday Heft, Three Simple Steps to Stay on Track this New Year

We’ve all been there, making our list of resolutions that, nine times out of ten, includes a gym membership or a crash, fad diet. We then go through with our brand-new plan for a few days, maybe even a month and then we just stop, leaving us feeling defeated and unaccomplished. This year will be different though, we’ve come up with three simple and do-able steps for staying on a healthy path this New Year. 2012 is looking brighter already!

iStock 000012145954XLarge 300x200 How Tuesday: Lose the Holiday Heft, Three Simple Steps to Stay on Track this New Year

1. “Take Small Bites”

We don’t mean to literally take smaller bites; we mean start slow and simple when going for a lifestyle change. The whole idea of changing your entire diet is unrealistic. When Mariel Hemingway, Wellness Week 2012’s spokeswoman, stopped by to give us all a few tips for staying healthy, she told us to start slow. “I say to people, if they want to change the way they eat, change your breakfast – start with one thing, because it’s do-able and more often than not, if you change your breakfast, you’ll feel differently at lunch and make a healthier choice then. If you push too hard or make it so extreme and so far from your regular life, then you won’t continue it. So I always say go slow, take small bites.”

 2. Make it FIT!

If the idea of getting up an hour early to go for a run or head to the gym makes you cringe now, you likely won’t actually get up and go when the alarm is blaring at 5am. Make your goals fit in with your lifestyle. If you don’t like waking up early then then try to tackle your workout after work. Buy free-weights and use them and do a few sets of crunches while you watch your favorite TV show if you can’t get the gym. Make working out a group activity. Go for a brisk walk with your friends or children. Check out our Big-Sister SpaFinder and keep in mind that SpaFinder isn’t just about spa, and find a fun yoga, Pilates or fitness class to take. As far as dieting goes, try to find healthy and delicious recipes to try at home so you don’t have to stick to an unappetizing diet. Make the goal pleasant.

 3. Give it Three Weeks

Don’t buy a gym membership or start a crash thinking that after a week, you’ll have lost 10 pounds and gained a brand new set of abs; that’s just not how it happens. Hemingway says that so many times “we put so much pressure on ourselves that we feel beaten before we start.” Don’t expect immediate results, “wellness doesn’t happen overnight, lifestyle is something that is created, its habits that are ingrained in you. Habits get ingrained over 21 days. It takes that long for a habit to happen, so you have to give something three weeks’ time in order for it to be in your cellular structure. [Once] you do that past the 21 days, then it becomes something that you just do.”

If you start with these three, simple steps: start slow, make the goals possible and be optimistic, we can guarantee that this year’s weight-loss resolutions will be kept!

Bond Over Beauty with Erika Katz’s Top Ten Beauty Resolutions for 2012

2012 is just around the corner and while most of our resolutions include going to the gym, eating healthy or quitting some vice, why not make some fun beauty resolutions while we’re at it? Erika Katz, author of Bond Over Beauty and “DIY” Beauty Expert, lists her top ten beauty resolutions for 2012 and we’re taking note of every single one!

iStock 000005328785Medium 300x197 Bond Over Beauty with Erika Katz’s Top Ten Beauty Resolutions for 2012

Beauty Resolution #10: Take better care of your teeth! Sip coffee and tea with a straw to avoid stains, floss after meals and brush with whitening toothpaste.

Beauty Resolution #9: Use an earpiece when talking on your cell phone to avoid rashes and red bumps on your chin.

Beauty Resolution #8: Let brows grow in and splurge on professional threading or tweezing to get brows into tip-top shape.

Beauty Resolution #7: Moisturize dry cuticles, removed chipped polish, and keep all nails one length.

Beauty Resolution #6: Throw out old crusty mascaras and liquid liners. Mascara only has a shelf life of 3 months, while liquid liner can last up to 6 months.

Beauty Resolution #5: Clean all makeup brushes with baby shampoo or alcohol, and sharpen pencils. Also, clean makeup case to keep everything neat and clean!

Beauty Resolution #4: Get more sleep to reduce puffiness and red eyes. Adults should get anywhere from 7-9 hours of sleep a night.

Beauty Resolution #3: Drink more water! The average adult woman should drink at least 9 cups of water a day. How many cups have you had today?

Beauty Resolution #2: Remove all makeup and mascara before bed each night. Sleeping with your makeup on can dry out your skin, clog your pores (which leads to break outs) and can lead to premature aging.

Beauty Resolution #1: Moisturize your whole body after showers and baths with baby oil or cream. By moisturizing after a shower, your skin traps more surface moisture than if you were to apply it to totally dry skin.

And, here are my top three “beauty resolutions” for this year:

1. Start wearing lipstick outside of my house – why should a bold lip only see the light of my bathroom mirror?

2. Make a genuine effort to exfoliate my skin at least once a week – I have so many scrubs at home that I know make a difference. To not be lazy with skincare is not only a beauty resolution but a life one at that.

3. Start wearing heels more (fashion is beautiful too!) Why do I insist on spending hundreds of dollars on serious stunners only to have them sit nicely as a decoration on my shoe rack? 2012 is the year of the heel for this girl!

What are some of your resolutions for 2012?

HydraFacial: Get a Kick Start on Moisture

After watching a re-run episode of the Real Housewives of Beverly Hills, I found myself lusting over the amazing in-house spa party Adrienne Maloof hosted for the girls. But what really made me stop and rewind was Kyle Richards’ face after receiving a HydraFacial (Adrienne has her own machine at home, perks of marrying a plastic surgeon, and being a bazillionaire!) Now, toss aside the fact that Kyle had a full face of flawless makeup on, but after the short treatment her skin was seriously glowing and dewy – hello dream skin. With winter on the way, the harsh cold and the dry skin that comes along with it, I think everyone would benefit from the amazing benefits of HydraFacial this season, real housewife or not!

hydrafacial machine 148x300 HydraFacial: Get a Kick Start on Moisture

HydraFacial by Edge Systems Corporation is a skin-resurfacing procedure that removes dead skin cells and extracts impurities while it washes new skin with cleansing, hydrating and moisturizing serums.  The system is non-irritating, designed for all skin types, and effects can be seen immediately, though six sessions are recommended for lines, wrinkles, hyperpigmentation, acne and oily skin. Prior to starting the treatment, a consultation should take place to discuss the specific serums that will be used during the procedure.

Kristen Haines, owner and esthetician at Euphoria Spa, NYC, gave me further insight on why this treatment is ideal for the upcoming chilly months.

“The HydraFacial is an excellent treatment for the fall and winter seasons because it gently combines exfoliation with hydration,” Kristen says. “The cooler weather can cause the skin to lose much needed moisture, and elements such as wind lead to sensitized, dry and irritated skin. A common complaint we get at Euphoria during the winter months is that our client’s skin is sensitive, dry and flaky but at the same time clogged from heavy moisturizers. HydraFacial gently exfoliates dead cells and deeply cleans the pores while infusing vitamins and hyaluronic acid into the skin. It is painless and refreshing as the vortex tip glides over the skin. Clients see an immediate difference in fine lines, texture and tone. Flakes are gone, and the skin is balanced again.”

Perhaps the best thing that Kristen told me was that after the HydraFacial, your skin is restored to a state where it will be better penetrated by at-home moisturizers since it is clear of dead skin cells, making it a great option to kick off a colder climate skincare routine.

HydraFacial was first introduced at the American Academy of Dermatology Annual Meeting in 2005; the following year it won the industry’s “Best of the Best.”  The HydraFacial was just voted as LNE & Spa’s Best Machine of 2011.
